Rockpool Blues Swirling in the seashells Jewels in the sun Rippled reflections Of a girl so young The creatures glint and sparkle And dart from side to side Hiding in the shadows Waiting for the tide What’s your secret, little rockpool? You never seen to age I guess the tide just keeps on flushing those rockpool blues away A million waves and moments since I felt the ocean spray With my weathered, tired relection I felt a pull today Well the creatures glint and sparkle And dart from side to side My tiny little ocean Where emotions coincide What’s your secret, little rockpool? You never seen to age I guess the tide just keeps on flushing those rockpool blues away In another million moments I’ll be old and grey Forgive the introspection Might not be another day But the creatures glint and sparkle And dart from side to side My heart lives in the rockpool Where the earth and sea collide What’s your secret, little rockpool? You never seen to age I guess the tide just keeps on flushing those rockpool blues away ... little rockpool? You never seen to age Well I guess the tide keeps flushing those rockpool blues away

Thirteen Pianos Well I read this in the news today So I don’t know if it’s true It struck a chord and it made me think So I’m sharing it with you. They counted all the pianos in Gaza From the border to the sea They searched houses, hotels and the music school And they only found thirteen In a dark, forgotten theatre From a brighter, bygone age There are shards of shattered ceiling Scattered on the stage And among the piles of rubble In that aching no-man’s-land With strings all rusted and out of tune Is the only concert grand There’s a guy who lives along from me He came knocking at my door He asked me, did I understand? And it never mattered more So we stepped outside for an evening stroll And the streets were so serene Counting pianos in our neighbourhood Well d’you know, we found thirteen When will the wind stop blowing in the east? When will the wind stop blowing in the east? When your bones have turned to dust In a soil that doesn’t care And humanity prevails over belief Now I’m sitting here in my music room And I don’t know if it’s true A spark just flew from the open fire With another point of view But I’m thankful for my neighbour And I’m thankful for my hands And I’ll play this tune for the Gazan folk And their silent concert grand

Child 04:21
Child Being, feeling, breathing, opening cry Life is a gift, and a gift for the giver Needing, holding, hearing a lullaby Making those dreams special dreams Precious child Softly cup your hands around my face I’ll feel so warm in your embrace We’ll grow up high among the stars, And maybe, maybe we will shine Learning, listening, teaching, reaching out far Keeping it real, all that we hold Growing, knowing, watching the smile in your eyes Setting us free, letting us be Precious child Softly cup my hands around your face We’ll feel so warm in our embrace We’ll grow up high beyond the stars And maybe, maybe we will shine Canta y no llores, sing and don’t cry Look in the mirror In the mirror, mother and child Sharing the highs and the lows Nobody knows

about

I wrote Thirteen Pianos after reading a news article about Gaza's only concert grand piano which was badly damaged during the bombings of 2014. From the story, I learned that there are only thirteen pianos in the whole of Gaza. It got me thinking that I can take a short walk around the neighbourhood in my village near Glasgow and count at least thirteen pianos in the houses and schools that I pass.

For the cover artwork, I used a haunting photograph of two children walking hand-in-hand amid piles of rubble in Gaza, and added thirteen images of the pianos in my neighbourhood. The main piano drawing depicts the concert grand piano in the story and it was drawn by a local artist and friend from sketches of my own piano.
